We have a new member to our family. Smokey Joe is a rescued cat.
A friend of mine found him, rather he found her, and she took him to a shelter. The folks at the shelter and they said they would hold him for 3 days, but if no one claimed him, they would put him to sleep because he was unadoptable. The reasons – he was too matted and had ear mites.
during the 5 weeks Smokey lived with them, she had him neutered, declawed, and all the shots and things one normally does for cats. Also the ear mite problem solved. She had his very long, very matted coat shaved off. It’s just growing in now.

I believe that Smokey Joe is either all or part Maine Coon cat. We’ve had one before, and he seems to fit all the criteria looks wise and behaviorwise. I can't wait to see him when his coat grows back!
Oh he is beautiful!! Look at that face!! I have a soft spot in my heart for cats - Maybe that's why I've got 12. But of course, I've got a soft spot in my heart for all critters.
Posted by: flax at September 4, 2005 09:13 PMPutz! You'll probably never see my comment wayyyyy down here. But I gotta do it. I love that cat. Actually, I love all cats. I even love my brat cat, Rambo. Rambo thinks he owns this place he lives in, but since he's never given me a check to help with the rent, I will have to inform him someday he owes me a great deal of money. Of course, he will just flick his whiskers and stomp away.
He is from our Humane Society, where I did volunteer work until my back said "No more". Do I miss it, egads! Rambo is also a rescue and I would have taken about 25 more cats home, but my landlord is kind of weird, he says I can only have ONE. Bummer. =^,,^=
Posted by: Lorraine at September 3, 2005 03:29 PMCas, he is beautiful. I look forward to seeing more pics of him and hearing more of how he is doing. I hope he has a lovely personality and fits in comfortably. I am sure he will do such fine with your loving family and I am sure you will do just fine with him too.
Posted by: Michelle at September 1, 2005 05:55 PMAww he's beautiful! And very lucky to have found such a good home :)
Posted by: Jules at September 1, 2005 07:41 AMAwww, welcome to Smokey Joe!
Posted by: Chris at September 1, 2005 07:26 AMOh, how pretty.
Posted by: Allan at August 31, 2005 05:12 PMHe's beautiful--even without the long fur. Imagine what he'll look like later on.
I'm a little shocked they didn't think he was adoptable, for such easily-remedied reasons. That's sad, but I guess so many people just want kittens. Was it a humane society or a city or county shelter? I know here, the humane society is much more proactive about saving animals. The pound just isn't funded well enough.
We love our rescued cat. I bet you'll love yours too. They're extra-special pets. I think they know that you've given them a second chance.
Posted by: Barbara W. Klaser at August 31, 2005 02:26 PMSmokey Joe has the sweetest face. That was the first thing I noticed about him. I can't imagine him being unadoptable. That is sad!!
Posted by: A Touch of Style at August 31, 2005 12:16 PMYay a kitty. More pictures, since it seems to like sitting there for you. I can't get cats to hold still for anything.

Posted by: Christie at August 30, 2005 03:51 PMGreat cat name! My friend Keli had a cat by the name of Smokey Joe move in with her family after his family moved and left him behind. Go over to my pictures at Webshots (link is on my page) to see a picture of him.
Posted by: Valarie Marie at August 30, 2005 10:12 AMI see a mouse, but no opposable thumbs to play Unreal Tournament. So I'll just nap here.
Posted by: Mark at August 30, 2005 09:02 AMYou go JOE! :)
Posted by: Mark at August 29, 2005 06:11 PMSmokey Joe is beautiful! Every once in a while, I see a picture of a cat and think, "Maybe." But then I remember my dogs, and how they have that instinctive "cats are prey" thought pattern (because I've never really had them around cats), and I just don't think I could do it.
We tried, once, before Pepper came along, but the cat was too scared to adjust to life with even one dog, and tried to claw her eye out, at which point the husband said she had to go. But she came from his mom's place, and we took her back there, so there was no destroying involved.
