And I live there!

Pennsylvania – Booze State.wineman.jpg

I saw this article in a local paper not too long ago.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is the largest purchaser of wine and spirits in the United States, and its sales of the stuff in fiscal year 2002-03 topped $1.2 billion.

I don't think I'm doing my share!

Is this really me?

Meg at Mandarin Design had this website in one of her recent posts. You can go create a “picture” of yourself by choosing parts.

It was a fun exercise. I’m not sure I really look like the pic that I created. But it was fun.

I Just LOVE Kids

I was visiting at mommy needs coffee recently and she had a cute story about her daughter and the "most necessary" milk cup.

I was reminded of a story about Alan, a wonderful little boy I watched for many years before entering the corporate world.

Alan couldn't exist without the quilt I made him for a baby gift. So, because he stayed in two places, (my house and his home) we cut the quilt into two pieces, one half for each of his residences.

One day when he was four years old his mom (my best friend) called and said that Alan had given the home half of the quilt to his dogs, so they could be comfortable in their dog house.

It seemed like the opportune time, so I got on the phone with him (and very carefully approached the "get rid of the other half" conversation),and asked if he would like to give the other quilt half to the poor children so they could be warm and comfortable.

To this he answered, "can't we just throw it away??"
You just never know

And thanks so much, Buzz, for the Father's day post. Very nice.

To "Daddy" ;-)

Hiya Cas fans! This is Buzz just hijacking my dear Ma's site to wish Don (the closest thing I've got to a Dad) a Happy Father's Day. You would be hard pressed to find a nicer, kinder, gentler man than Don and I, for one, feel that my life is richer for having him in it.

Happy Father's Day, Don. I hope you're out there having a great time today!

Wildlife Event

On my way to work quite early today, I had to stop in the road to let a rabbit make a decision as to which side of the road was actually more desirable.

Then I drove on. There were 4 squirrels playing in the middle of the road and not anxious to change the location of their play date. So I waited till they all decided which side of the road was best.

Then, I drove on the campus at work, and had to stop for 11 Canada geese (adults and babies) to cross the road. After almost all of them got across, The Daddy Goose waited in the middle of the road for the one baby who had not yet crossed the road. I drove very slowly, and he did move to let me by.

As I looked into my rearview mirror, I noticed that the driver of the next car wasn’t quite so lucky. She was still sitting there after I parked my car.

I mentioned to one of the guards about the geese, and he told me that the very large snapping turtle (also lives on our campus) had taken up a “place to sun” on the road. Since no one wanted to move him, some employee went out and put out road signs to protect the little fellow.

Pop-Ups and Spam

Two of my pet peeves in pc-land are Pop ups and Spam. I get the feeling I am not alone in this.

Yesterday I was reading a comment from Buzz regarding Pop Up ads. And I agree with him. Does anyone every actually spend money on anything that came from a pop up ad?

And I had a walk over to Texas T-Bone's site and read his comments about Spam - another favorite topic.

spam - honeyside up blog.jpg - This can of Spam is borrowed from CJ over at HoneySide Up ,who also has had problems recently.

I have deleted hundreds of unwanted messages from my email accounts in the past week. And to be perfectly honest, I can think of lots of things I'd rather do.

Please people - How about a little time off from all the "extras"

Mrs. Doubt*fire

Don and I often use the comment, “drive by fruiting” from the movie. As I think of it, I wonder if it wasn’t “run by fruiting” Is there anyone out there who knows the answer to that?

Mrs Doubtfire.jpg

There have been so many phrases that sneak into our every day life, from movies and songs and yes, even television shows,

I wonder if any of you bloggers have any to share.

Turkey Buzzard

Don and I were coming home from the store yesterday, and what should we see, but a turkey buzzard sitting on the fence of a neighbor’s porch! Now mind you, we don’t live in the country – we’re in a suburban area. What strange sights we see these days.

I was over visiting My Messy Mind and she had a picture of her front yard with a deer eating a rose bush. Also not a country setting.

Got any Pets?

I was just wondering if anyone out there had any pets (actually I know some of you do) and just what prompted you to name them whatever their names are.
cat.jpg

We’ve had 4 cats through the years, and they were all adopted. I never exactly liked any of their original names, so I changed them:

Mrs. Serena started out as Sabrina – she had 4 beautiful kittens. She was a very small Sealpoint Siamese.

Meggie was originally named Princess Margaret She was a Bluepoint Balinese, also very small.

Kelly was named Callie by her first owner, She was a great big tortie with a lot of Maine Coon cat in her background. And she was a big cat!

And finally, Gracie started out as Fanny (didn't like that name) She’s a beautiful tiny pale marmalade long hair cat. Unfortunately, she was badly abused, and even after 2 years, still runs away at times. We’re making headway, but it’s sure slow going.

I’ve also had a couple of dogs along the way-

Susie & Mollie, mother and daughter beagles

Sam & Sadie Lou, father and daughter Lhasa Apsos

Emma Lou – a smiling black and tan hound dog type.

We also had a very large adopted dog - looked like he came from the stone age, His original owner named him Okemo after a ski resort, and I called him Kimmie.

I think he bit Buzz once.

Watch those P's and Q's

ps and qs.jpg

Someone at work reminded me of the expression, "you'd better mind your P's and Q's, and I wondered what it really meant. Actually, it means lots of things.

Theories include:
admonishment to children learning to write
admonishment to typesetters (who had to look at the letters reversed
admonishment to seamen not to soil their navy pea-jackets with their tarred "queues" (pigtails)
*mind your pints and quarts
mind your prices and quality
mind your pieds and queues

The most plausible explanation is the one given in the latest edition of Collins English Dictionary: an alteration of "Mind your 'please's and 'thank you's".

*My favorite story - In the days of sail when Sailors were paid a pittance, seamen drank their ale in taverns whose keepers were willing to extend credit until payday. Since many salts were illiterate, keepers kept a tally of pints and quarts consumed by each Sailor on a chalkboard behind the bar. Next to each person's name, a mark was made under "P" for pint or "Q" for quart whenever a seaman ordered another draught.

On payday, each seaman was liable for each mark next to his name, so he was forced to "mind his P's and Q's" or he would get into financial trouble. To ensure an accurate count by unscrupulous keepers, Sailors had to keep their wits and remain somewhat sober. Sobriety usually ensured good behavior, hence the meaning of "mind your P's and Q's."

Well, I thought it was kind of interesting. Many of us use many phrases that we have no idea of what they really mean.
