Summer Salad

It seems like when we go to a picnic where everyone brings something, Broccoli Raisin Salad is often on the menu.

I decided to try my hand at this culinary delight, and couldn’t find a recipe that exactly suited my needs.  So I improvised:

Broccoli Raisin Salad

1 head of broccoli – broken into small pieces
1 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 handfuls of raisins
1 red spanish onion, sliced thin – ‘cause that’s what all the recipes call for
And for good measure, I added some thinly sliced carrots (I like carrots)

Mix together and let sit at least 4 hours.

It was very good.
And even better on the second day!

Rico the Einstein Dog

Man’s best friend might be even smarter than we thought — at least judging by one clever border collie, scientists say.

Researchers say dogs can understand up to 200 words.

The finale of our 4-day fun filled holiday weekend.

We went to a Phillies game with 4 other members of our family (2 parents, and 2 boys, age 7 & 9) last night, and the Phillies WON!

This is the first baseball game I’ve gone to since elementary school.

The Phillies have a new stadium, Citizens Bank Park – Very nice.

We had a really good time.

Well, which is it?

Is it:
Pullet Suprise

Or
Pulitzer Prize

Ten years ago, Professor Jerrold Zar composed a brilliant poem, which he called Candidate for a Pullet Surprise. Here’s the first verse:

I have a spelling checker,
It came with my PC.
It plane lee marks four my revue
Miss steaks aye can knot sea.

Since then, thousands of readers around the world have chuckled over the poem and emailed it to their friends. It’s also a favourite on the internet. Google has some 1420 references to it on websites which have copied the original words, or posted versions amended by various wits and halfwits. Some have retitled it as Owed to a Spelling Checker or Spellbound. Many webmasters have added Unknown author, or Anon. One says Sauce unknown.

Here is the complete, official version, published with the author’s kind permission

Mother and puppy

A very good friend of mine has a son stationed in Iraq.

His group (unit?) is stationed along the border of Iraq and Kuwait.

They have befriended one of the homeless dogs that are so prevalent there (and are perpetually hungry).

Here is a picture of their adopted dog and her one puppy.

Either that’s all the puppies she had, or all that survived.  The picture of the puppy is in their Hummer.  It was a cold night and the guys wanted him to be comfortable!
