Orchid Extravaganza

Don and I went to Longwood Gardens on Saturday to see their “Orchid Extravanganza”.  It was beautiful.
We saw thousands of orchid plants.  So many different varieties.”

“Orchid blooms cascade down walls, spill from containers and adorn planting beds throughout 4-acres of indoor gardens.
See thousands of orchids from around the world”

It was such a nice day that I think we’ll go back again before this display is over on March 31st.

When I was a senior in high school, I worked in an orchid greenhouse.  Actually, there were 5 greenhouses just stuffed with orchids.
My boss, Ned, used to send me home with orchids often.  They were beautiful, and they lasted for weeks.

Potty Party?

YesterdayI was talking to a friend who is soon to be a new mother.
She also has a 3-year old son ,
and she really wanted her young son out of diapers before the new baby arrived.
She and her little boy had spent the day in the bathroom at a “Potty Party”.

I never heard of that!

There was much singing and book reading and many balloons, and, all in all, the party was a success.

I G00gled the phrase and it seems that I may be the only person in this country who didn’t know about this party.

image

There were several kits advertised for this event, and one was nearly 100 dollars.

That’s some pretty serious partying.

Dessert for tonight

We’re having company this evening, and although I’m not much of a dessert eater, it seems that everyone else is.

I’m going to make this old family favorite. This recipe is from my Aunt Ella.  She made these bars for almost every family get together.  And they are really good.

LEMON DELUXE BARS

Crust: 2 cups flour,
1/2 cup powdered sugar and
1 cup butter
Cut butter into mixture until it clings together.
Press into a greased 13x9x2” pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

4 beaten eggs

2 cups sugar

1/3 cup lemon juice

1/4 cup flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Beat together eggs, sugar and lemon juice.  Mix together flour and baking powder, then stir into egg mix.
Pour over lightly browned crust.  Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or more.

Sprinkle with additional powdered sugar.  Cool.  Cut into bars or squares.  Makes 30 bars

Happy Birthday Charles

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth.

Darwin Day is a global celebration of science and reason held on or around Feb. 12,
the birthday anniversary of evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin.

hungry birds

Lately, we’ve had some very cold and somewhat snowy days around here.
Don is so diligent about keeping our bird feeders full, especially in this weather.

And we’ve had lots of visitors in our yard these past few days.

They certainly brighten a cold, blustery day.

Have a nice weekend, everyone!

Muffins -

I had some bananas in my kitchen that were just about ready to throw away.  It seemed like a good time to try a new banana muffin recipe.

Banana Nut Oatmeal Muffins

image

1 1/2 cup Flour (I substituted about ¼ cup of wheat flour for some of the flour)
1/2 cup Sugar (I used a bit less)
1/4 cup quick Oats
2 teaspoons Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
--------------------
3 Mashed Ripe Bananas
1/2 cup Milk
1 Egg
2 Tablespoons Vegetable oil
2 teaspoons Lemon Juice
1 1/4 cups Walnuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease muffin tins. (makes 12 muffins)
Mix flour, sugar, oats, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl, mix well.

Mash bananas in another bowl. Stir in milk, egg, oil, and lemon juice. Mix into dry ingredients and walnuts. Stir just until dry ingredients are just mixed. Scoop batter into muffin tins.

(optional-Add some banana slices on top)

Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown and toothpick inserted into center comes out clean

They are delicious, and I served them with butter and cream cheese.

Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow on Groundhog Day; six more weeks of winter

image
image Phil the famous groundhog is held aloft in the most undignified manner.)
No, Phil, say it ain’t so! Early this morning, the famous groundhog poked his head out of his burrow at Gobbler’s Knob and upon seeing his shadow, darted back inside.
Legend dictates that this signifies six more weeks of winter. (Had Phil not seen his shadow, that would have meant we were in for an early spring.)

Crowds gathered at Gobbler’s Knob, located 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, groaned upon hearing the news.

February - and it couldn’t come too soon for me

I’m not fond of winter, and once February has started, we are that much closer to spring.
We might even see a nice day or two shortly.
Here’s a calendar page that offers a few little known celebrations, if you feel the need to have a celebration.

image

The 27th looks good for me.  No Brainer Day, and International Polar Bear Day.  Both are very appealing.

Happy celebrating!
