Scam?

Don received a check for $3.50 in the mail this week.  It was from a large company and you would probably recognize the name.

On the tear-off portion of the check, (not on the check itself) was written, “By the cashing of this check you are authorizing withdrawals from your checking account.”

That made me a bit nervous. 
We didn’t cash the check.
